Swan Neck Deformity

NAME OF PATHOLOGY: Swan Neck Deformity


Definition: Swan neck deformity is a condition which affects the finger(s), whereby the distal phalyngeal joint remains in hyperflexion and the proximal interphalyngeal joint remains in hyperextension. The volar plate is damaged at the proximal interphalyngeal.

Causes: Swan neck deformity is often associated with rheumatoid arthritis, however, it may be congenital. Other causes can be traumatic where there is ligamentous and tendinous damage.


Examination: A patient suffering from a swan neck deformity will present with hyperflexion of the distal phalyngeal joint and hyperextension of the proximal interphalyngeal joint.
