General Examination
This is the first of a series of presentations on clinical examination. A General Examination of the Patient is a preliminary and important step before focusing into one of the body systems. The student is guided through a virtual classroom environment enhanced with live footage, graphic images, animations, pictures of pathologies, sound recordings and revision tables, starting from basic considerations to more advanced clinical techniques.
It includes general and important considerations before undertaking a comprehensive examination of the patient, particularly when this is their first encounter with the clinician.
General examination of the patient includes the following features:
- Preparation of the clinical setting
- Key questions in case history taking
- General observation of the patient, face, hands and body, features and their significance in local or systemic diseases
- Inspection of face and body for evidence of systemic or endocrine disorders
- Evaluation of skin and significance of skin features in systemic diseases
- Palpation of lymph nodes
- Examination of the thyroid
- Assessing the presence of oedema, the different types and their causes
